The Lyric Opera's West Side Story
THE ever-popular musical West Side Story, the gem of Broadway musicals, is on its way to the Lyric Opera for an elaborate and exhilarating production that runs from May 3 through June 2. And fans of the musical are eagerly waiting to see the production done in a way that only the Lyric Opera can do it. Since its premiere on September 26, 1957, generations have been infatuated with West Side Story, a legendary love story about two youngsters from rival New York City gangs who fall in love, heightening tensions between the Sharks and the Jets, and results in disaster. The original six-time Tony Award-winning musical benefited from an amazing creative team that included Leonard Bernstein (music), Arthur Laurents (book) and Jerome Robbins (director/choreographer), each of whom already had enjoyed major success on Broadway. The captivating drama, the iconic dances and the award-winning songs (“Maria,” “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty”) combine for a legendary presentation.
