Chicago Is Talking About . . .
The Sugarhill Gang At City Winery
WHILE tap-dancing recently has been elevated as a form of entertainment, Dein Perry’s TAP DOGS has taken the classic style of dance to another level, and it will be showcased at the Nederlander Theatre during a limited run from April 16-21. Described as “positively electrifying,” TAP DOGS is a combination of high-energy dance, theatrical performance and live music, creating a 90-minute performance that has been hailed internationally. The performance by the six talented tap dancers includes impressive sequences using circular saws, scaffold poles and even introduces an upside down tapper. After 20 years of thrilling audiences, TAP DOGS has collected more than 15 global awards, including an Olivier Award, an Obie Award and a Pegasus Award. It has appeared at more than 330 cities on six continents and live audiences have exceeded 12 million people. For more information, go to www.broadwayinchicago.com.
The Lyric Opera's West Side Story
Dein Perry's TAP DOGS
THE ever-popular musical West Side Story, the gem of Broadway musicals, is on its way to the Lyric Opera for an elaborate and exhilarating production that runs from May 3 through June 2. And fans of the musical are eagerly waiting to see the production done in a way that only the Lyric Opera can do it. Since its premiere on September 26, 1957, generations have been infatuated with West Side Story, a legendary love story about two youngsters from rival New York City gangs who fall in love, heightening tensions between the Sharks and the Jets, and results in disaster. The original six-time Tony Award-winning musical benefited from an amazing creative team that included Leonard Bernstein (music), Arthur Laurents (book) and Jerome Robbins (director/choreographer), each of whom already had enjoyed major success on Broadway. The captivating drama, the iconic dances and the award-winning songs (“Maria,” “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty”) combine for a legendary presentation. THE Sugarhill Gang, the legendary group that’s generally credited with the first commercial rap record ever made (1979’s “Rapper’s Delight”) brings their genius to City Winery for a performance on May 11. The history-making group was instrumental in ushering hip-hop into mainstream society in the United States and internationally. The group now consists of Original members Wonder Mike (Michael Wright) and Master Gee (Guy O’Brien) who are teaming with Hen Dogg (Henry Williams) and DJ T. Dynasty. After a long battle with cancer, Big Bank Hank, another original member, died in 2014 at the age of 58. Go to www.citywinery.com for more information and tickets.
