ONE of Chicago’s most popular music series is back, bringing with it a melodic signal that summer is just around the corner. The Millennium Park Summer Music Series kicks off at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion on June 6 with opening-day performances by Blonde Redhead and Ryley Walker. The free concert series, which highlights local, national and international performers, continues through August 25. As it has been in the past, a number of genres will be represented by a variety of artists, including Femi Kuti, Jose Gonzalez, Maceo Parker, the Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra and King Sunny Adé, one of Nigeria’s most influential musicians in the development and international popularization of juju music. He was scheduled to be a part of last year’s music series, but visa problems that the U.S. State Department blamed on “a global computer hardware failure” prevented his appearance.
